Gin
Gin is basically a flavored vodka. Neutral grain spirits are taken (the base for vodka) and either add a juniper flavoring, or infuse the alcohol with juniper and other botanicals and redistill. The secret to fine gin is the combination of the juniper and the botanicals.
Gin started out in Holland and with William of Orange found its way to England. In England it quickly became the favored drink of the poor and acquired a bad reputation as a result. As a result it was taxed heavily and went from a drink of the masses to one of the elite by the Twentieth century.
During the 1920’s and 30’s it made its way to the US and became the base for some ever-popular cocktails. The gin and tonic and the martini are two of the most famous. London Dry type gin gives the subtlest of the gin types.
